About
Prof. Dr. Ina Tegen is Head of the Department of Modeling of Atmospheric Processes at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research in Leipzig and Professor at the Leipzig Institute of Meteorology, University of Leipzig. She has held these positions since 2012 and has extensive experience in atmospheric research spanning over three decades.
Her academic background includes:
- 2009: Habilitation in Meteorology, University of Leipzig
- 1992: Doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in Physics, University of Heidelberg
- 1988: Diploma in Physics, University of Heidelberg
- 1982-1988: Study of Physics, University of Heidelberg
Prof. Tegen's research focuses on numerical modeling of atmospheric processes, particularly the dispersion and effects of atmospheric aerosols. Her work spans multiple areas including dust transport modeling, climate-aerosol interactions, and atmospheric chemistry. She has led significant research projects on Saharan dust transport, aerosol-cloud interactions, and regional modeling of atmospheric processes across Europe and the Atlantic.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on atmospheric aerosols, climate modeling, and environmental processes. The research trends show increasing integration of observational data with modeling approaches, with particular emphasis on dust transport, aerosol-cloud interactions, and the impacts of atmospheric particles on climate and environmental systems.
Prof. Tegen serves in several important professional roles:
- Associate Editor, Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres
- Member of the Steering Committee, SDS-WAS (Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System, WMO)
- Member of the Steering Committee HAMMOZ (Aerosol and Atmospheric Chemistry Modules for ECHAM)
She has secured significant research funding through multiple projects including Aerosol-Ocean Interaction (SOPRAN), High Definition Clouds & Precipitation in Climate Prediction (HD(CP)2), and Direct Normal Irradiance Nowcasting (DNICast). Her completed projects include extensive work on Saharan dust transport (SAMUM-1 and SAMUM-2), European aerosol characterization, and global aerosol climatology.
Prof. Tegen leads the Modeling of Atmospheric Processes department at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, which focuses on numerical modeling of atmospheric aerosols and their effects on climate and environmental systems.
