About
Prof. Dr. Kerstin Schepanski serves as Professor for Radiation and Remote Sensing of Atmospheres at the Institute of Meteorology, Free University of Berlin (since April 2021). Previously, she held roles as Private Lecturer at the University of Leipzig (2015-2021) and led research groups at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (2015-2021). Her research focuses on mineral dust aerosols, satellite remote sensing, and aerosol-atmosphere modeling, with particular emphasis on dust source dynamics, transport mechanisms, and environmental/health impacts.
- Key projects: FINDUS, HILDA, DUSTRISK, Martian Dust Cycle, Southern Hemisphere Mineral Dust
- Current affiliations: Editorial Board of Communications Earth & Environment; Advisory Board for Quality Assurance at FU Berlin
Her scientific work reveals strong specialization in dust emission parameterization, optical property analysis, and cross-continental dust transport modeling. Recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary connections between atmospheric science and mental health research through environmental exposure studies. Active teaching includes modules on satellite meteorology, radiation & remote sensing, and planetary climate systems.
