Iain Docherty

Professor Iain Docherty serves as Dean for the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Stirling, where he has been employed since April 2019. His academic career includes a prior role as Professor of Public Policy and Governance and Director of External Engagement at the University of Glasgow Adam Smith Business School. He holds a BSc and PhD in Geography and Economic & Social History from the University of Glasgow.

• Research Interests: Public policy, institutional change, city and regional competitiveness, and transport’s role in economic development and environmental sustainability.
• Advisory Roles: Academic Panel advisor for the UK Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government on City/Regional Growth Deals; Thought Leader for ESRC and Innovate UK; Infrastructure Theme Lead for ESRC Productivity Insights Network; Project Leader for EPSRC-funded research on long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on transport and mobility.
• Board Memberships: External Member of Scottish Funding Council’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee; REF2029 People, Culture and Environment Pilot Panel for Social Policy and Social Work; UKRI Interdisciplinary Assessment College.
• Transport Sector Governance: Chair of Scottish Rail Holdings; Director and Chair of Capital Programmes Committee at National Transport Authority of Ireland; former Commissioner of National Infrastructure Commission for Scotland and Non-Executive Director of Transport Scotland and Scotrail.
• Fellowships: Academy of Social Sciences, Royal Society of Edinburgh, Royal Society of Arts, Royal Geographical Society, Institution of Civil Engineers; Chartered Member of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
