About
Prof. Huub Rottgering is a Professor of Observational Cosmology at Leiden University, affiliated with the Leiden Observatory within the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on active galaxies, galaxy clusters, and large-scale structures in the distant universe, utilizing radio telescopes like LOFAR and optical instruments such as the VLT. He has led projects including the Development and Commissioning of LOFAR for Astronomy (DCLA) and contributed to ESA's Darwin and NASA's TPF missions. Rottgering has supervised 19 PhD students, authored/co-authored 159 refereed papers, and edited 4 books.
Education:
- B.Sc. Astronomy, Leiden University (1984)
- M.Sc. Astronomy and Physics, Leiden University (1988)
- Ph.D. Astronomy, Leiden University (Thesis: Ultra-Steep Spectrum Radio Sources: Tracers of Distant Galaxies)
Research Interests: Observational studies of galaxy evolution, radio galaxies as cosmic probes, interferometric techniques, and the role of LOFAR/APERTIF in studying proto-clusters and cluster mergers. His work addresses questions about cosmic magnetic fields, shock waves in clusters, and the interplay between galaxies and their environments.
Professional Roles:
- Scientific Director (2012–present)
- PI of DCLA project (2003–present)
- Leadership roles in LOFAR's ARC and RMC committees
- Member of international panels for ESO, NASA's TPF, and ESA's Darwin
Labs/Teams: Leiden Observatory, LOFAR Collaboration, APERTIF Project.
