Hui Ma

Hui Ma is an Associate Professor in the Applied Mathematics department at the University of Virginia (UVA), part of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. She specializes in teaching applied mathematics to engineering students, emphasizing student confidence and joyful learning experiences. Her research focuses on innovative teaching methods, curriculum design, and improving student outcomes in mathematics education.

Dr. Ma holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (2012) and an M.S. in the same field (2008), both from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Before joining UVA, she taught at Black Hills State University. She actively contributes to academic conferences, presenting at ASEE Annual Conferences since 2017, with recent works on mastery grading and curriculum redesign.

Her awards include the 2023 All-University Teaching Award and multiple Education Innovation Awards (2016, 2017, 2022). She is also a finalist for the 2017 Trigon Engineering Society Thomas E. Hutchinson Award. Her work bridges pedagogical innovation with engineering education, aiming to create inclusive and effective learning environments.
