Dr. Howard Read is a Senior Lecturer in Illustration at the University of Wolverhampton's Faculty of Arts, Business, and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University (2012-2019), an MA in Illustration from the Royal College of Art (1995-1997), and a BA in Fine Art Painting from Chelsea School of Art (1986-1989). He completed a PgCert in Learning and Teaching in Art and Design at University of the Arts London (2006-2007) and served as an Associate Lecturer at Central Saint Martins (2001).
His research focuses on drawing as an expanded practice, particularly in urban history and spatial theory. He employs fieldwork-based methodologies to explore contested urban spaces, blending personal memory and phenomenological approaches to document change. Current interests include sketchbook methodologies as tools for knowledge production, drawing on Michael Taussig's theories.
Publications include seminal works like The role of drawing in the regeneration of urban spaces (2017) and exhibitions such as Sketchbook 10 (2017). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2007) and has contributed to exhibitions at venues like the Rabley Drawing Centre. Teaching spans all levels of the BA (Hons) Illustration program, emphasizing location-based creative practices.
