Howard Quednau

Howard Quednau is a Professor and Chair of the Fine Art Department at Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD). He holds an MFA and MA from Northern Illinois University School of Art, and a BS from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His work spans printmaking, painting, and 3D dioramas, blending narrative and representational themes with explorations of realism.

Quednau’s research focuses on spatial representation through dioramas and low-relief painting techniques. His recent works conflate politics and pandemic themes, using modified model figures and scaled environments. Exhibitions include the Phipps Center for the Arts, Metro State University, and Gustavus Adolphus College.

As department chair, he oversees curricula in fine arts while maintaining an active exhibition schedule. His dioramas challenge traditional realism by merging physical sculpture with painterly surfaces, emphasizing questions of scale and imagined space.
