Howard Chiang is the Lai Ho & Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies and Professor of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds a Ph.D. in History (History of Science) from Princeton University (2012) and has held roles such as Assistant Professor at the University of Warwick (2012–2016). His research bridges modern Chinese history, global queer studies, and the history of science and medicine, with a focus on gender, sexuality, and the human sciences. He is affiliated with the Center for Taiwan Studies and has directed major research networks like the AHRC-funded 'China and the Human Sciences: 1600 to the Present.'
Chiang's awards include the Gregory Sprague Prize (2010) and the John C. Burnham Award (2007), recognizing his contributions to LGBTQ history and the history of human science. He has authored/co-edited over 20 books, including After Eunuchs and Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific, and co-edits the Cultural History Series. His work challenges China-centric frameworks, emphasizing transnational and postcolonial perspectives in Sinophone studies.
