Stig Hjarvard is a Professor of Media Studies at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, and concurrently holds a Professor II position at the University of Bergen's Department of Information Science and Media Studies. His research focuses on mediatization theory, media sociology, and globalization studies. He has led numerous research programs, including the FKK-funded 'The Mediatization of Culture: The Challenge of New Media' (2011–2015) and 'Newspapers and Journalism in Transition' (2007–2010).
He has held guest professorships at institutions like the University of Otago and University of Gothenburg. Awards include the 2016 Humanities Research Award from the University of Copenhagen and Royal Danish Academy membership (2015). His editorial roles include chief editor of Northern Lights since 2009 and leadership in major European media research initiatives.
Research interests span mediatization's societal impact, news production dynamics, and digital publishing transformations. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical studies on media's role in cultural and institutional change.
