Hina Azam is an Associate Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Middle Eastern Studies. She holds affiliations with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Department of Religious Studies, and Center for Women and Gender Studies. Her academic journey began with a PhD from Duke University in 2007, focusing on sexual violence in Mālikī legal ideology.
Dr. Azam specializes in Islamic law, Qur'anic exegesis, Islamic feminism, and pedagogy. Her research explores intersections between gender, sexuality, and religious ethics in Islamic legal traditions. She investigates historical and contemporary debates about sexual violence, marriage advice literature, and legal pluralism in Islamic jurisprudence.
Her scholarly work has been recognized with prestigious awards including the James Henry Breasted Award (2016) for her book Sexual Violation in Classical Islamic Law and Texas Ten honors (2019) for exceptional teaching. She serves on the Graduate Assembly, Curriculum and Design Committee, and Jefferson Center for Core Texts and Ideas steering committee.
