Peter Wright

Peter Wright is an Associate Professor at Colorado College, specializing in Islamic studies, Arabic literature, and religious history. He holds positions in the departments of Arabic, Islamic, & Middle Eastern Studies; Asian Studies; and Religion, Culture, and Power. His research focuses on Qur’anic exegesis, religious pluralism, and the intersection of religion and violence. Wright earned his J.D. from Duquesne University, a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and both a Ph.D. and M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

His work bridges historical analysis and critical theory, emphasizing intertextual relationships in religious texts. Key research areas include Islamic sacred literature interpretation, the role of violence in religious contexts, and transnational Islam in the Americas. He has published widely on topics such as Qur’anic prophecy, modern hermeneutics, and comparative religious ethics.

Wright’s teaching spans introductory courses like Introduction to Religion and advanced seminars on mysticism and Islamic scripture. His recent publications include Varieties of Islamic Humanism (forthcoming) and reviews of seminal works in Islamic studies. He actively engages with public discourse through lectures on Islamophobia, the Taliban, and religious pluralism.

He has presented at major conferences such as the American Academy of Religion and contributed to interdisciplinary initiatives like the Carolina-Duke Graduate Student Conferences. His scholarly contributions reflect a commitment to contextualizing religious texts within their historical and cultural milieus.
