Hilmar M. Pabel

Hilmar M. Pabel is a Professor of History at Simon Fraser University (SFU), specializing in Early Modern Europe, Renaissance humanism, and Catholic history. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and has been a faculty member at SFU since 1992, advancing from Assistant to Associate Professor before becoming a full Professor in 2005.

His research focuses on figures like Erasmus of Rotterdam and Peter Canisius, SJ, examining their roles in early modern intellectual and religious movements. Key areas include the history of the book, Catholic Reformation, and the interplay between humanism and theology. Pabel has authored or edited multiple books and numerous articles, contributing significantly to Erasmian studies and Jesuit intellectual history.

Awards include SSHRC grants and fellowships from institutions such as the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies and the Herzog August Bibliothek. He teaches courses on Western Civilization, Reformation Europe, and the history of Christianity.
