Hilkka Kontro is a Contract Faculty member (rank equivalent to Lecturer) in the Health and Physical Education school at Mount Royal University, with cross-appointment as a Post-Doctoral Associate at the University of Calgary. She holds a PhD from the University of Calgary, an MSc from the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), and a BSc from the University of Helsinki (Finland).
Kontro's research investigates integrative physiological responses during endurance exercise, specializing in hemoglobin mass dynamics, oxygen delivery mechanisms, and sex-based physiological differences. Her publications examine hematological adaptations, critical power thresholds in cycling, and environmental impacts on exercise performance.
Current studies include iron supplementation interventions and physiological strategies for endurance optimization. She teaches exercise physiology and athletic programming while maintaining active research collaboration with the University of Calgary.
