About
Hien Ngo is an Adjunct Professor at the Dental School, University of Western Australia (UWA). Their research focuses on cariology, fluoride remineralisation, and glass ionomer cements, with emphasis on biofilm management, dental materials innovation, and pediatric dental care. Key areas include dentin permeability reduction, antimicrobial therapies for caries arrest, and advanced imaging technologies for dental diagnostics and education.
Research interests span clinical applications of novel biomaterials, such as collagen membranes for bone regeneration and nanostructured adhesives, alongside leveraging augmented reality and virtual reality for dental training. Ngo’s work addresses global oral health challenges, including severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) and mucormycosis in immunocompromised patients.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches: combining engineering principles with dentistry to improve restorative materials, and applying eye-tracking and machine learning to study patient behavior and treatment outcomes. Current projects include using silver fluoride and teledentistry to manage childhood dental decay in remote Aboriginal communities. Ngo also serves on the State Oral Health Advisory Council, advocating evidence-based policies.
Recent articles emphasize biofilm debridement via ultrasound, collagen membrane efficacy in guided bone regeneration, and virtual reality’s role in prosthodontic education. Their work bridges basic science, translational research, and clinical practice to advance preventive and restorative dentistry.
