Helena Maria Pinheiro is an Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, within the Department of Bioengineering. Her research focuses on bioreactor engineering for wastewater and biowaste valorisation, integrated with spectroscopy and chemometrics for process monitoring. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering and teaches courses such as Environmental Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering.
- Education: MEng in Chemical Engineering, MSc in Biochemical Engineering, and PhD in Chemical Engineering (all from IST).
Her research interests include whole-cell bioreactors, microbial cultures, and sustainable waste management. She leads projects like PROMISEANG (protein production from microbial fermentation) and SMART SEAWEED (macroalgae valorization). Key grants include EU-funded initiatives addressing textile wastewater and nanoparticle impacts.
