Helen Dampier

Helen Dampier serves as a Senior Lecturer in Social and Cultural History at Leeds Beckett University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her academic profile centers on critical analysis of life writings within nineteenth and twentieth century South African historical contexts, examining intersections of imperialism, apartheid, and gendered political narratives.

Her research program spans South African History, Life Writing, and Gender Studies with emphases on women's testimonies as historical sources, political aftermaths of the 1899-1902 South African War, Afrikaner nationalism development, and epistolary politicking. Methodologically interdisciplinary, her work interrogates memory frameworks and historiographical claims through primary source recovery projects.

Dampier secured ESRC funding for the Olive Schreiner Letters Project establishing definitive epistolary resources, and led the AHRC-funded Emily Hobhouse Letters Project culminating in 2019 international exhibitions across UK and South Africa. She currently co-investigates the AHRC-supported Letters of Richard Cobden Online project exploring active citizenship through Victorian correspondence, operating within the Centre for Culture and Humanities.
