Haruko Momma

Haruko Momma is a Silver Professor and Professor of English at New York University and a status-only Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto. Her research spans medieval English language and culture, philology, lexicology, and onomastics, with a focus on intersections of race, gender, class, colonialism, and environmental studies.

• Education: PhD and Master’s in Medieval Studies from University of Toronto; Bachelor’s and Master’s in English from Hokkaido University.

Her current project at the Radcliffe Institute applies onomastic methods to analyze medieval and postmedieval geographies, comparing the British Isles with Hokkaido. Momma is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and serves as First Vice President, with editorial roles in series like Manchester Medieval Literature and Culture.

Her publications include From Philology to English Study (2012) and The Theater of Race and Its Supporting Actors (2021), reflecting her broader scholarly themes. Recent work integrates historical linguistics with critical race and environmental studies.
