Hartmut Austen is an Associate Professor of Studio Art and the Studio Art Minor Advisor at Boston College’s Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. He holds an Absolventenprüfung (BFA equivalent) and Meisterschüler (MFA equivalent) from Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. His abstract paintings and drawings emphasize structure, tactility, and visceral expression over representation. Austen has exhibited widely in the U.S. and Germany, including solo shows at Good Weather Gallery (Arkansas), The Butchers Daughter Gallery (Detroit), and group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Galerie Lisi Hämmerle (Bregenz).
He co-founded the Telegraph Art Collective and organized projects like ‘Berlin Calling’ (2016) and ‘Detroit: Telegraph’ (2007). Awards include the 2015 Faculty Imagine Fund Grant and 2009 Kresge Artist Fellowship. His work has been reviewed in publications like the Boston College Chronicle and Art Viewer.
Austen teaches courses such as ‘Alternative Approaches in Drawing’ and ‘Painting I: Foundations’ at Boston College.
