Harlan Weaver

Harlan Weaver is an Associate Professor and GWSS Graduate Certificate Director at Kansas State University's Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies department within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Santa Cruz and maintains an active research and teaching profile at the intersection of gender studies, animal studies, and disability justice.

Weaver earned his doctoral degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a leading institution for critical theory and interdisciplinary scholarship. His academic journey reflects a commitment to pushing disciplinary boundaries through innovative theoretical frameworks.

Dr. Weaver's research centers on the complex intersections between transgender studies, animal studies, and disability justice. His current project 'Trans Sciences, Trans Selves' interrogates the racial, colonial, and liberatory logics of trans sciences, health, and care. His book 'Bad Dog: Pit Bull Politics and Multispecies Justice' (2021) explores interspecies intersectionality through multispecies ethnography focused on pit bulls, animal rescue, and racialization. His scholarship consistently examines how affect, embodiment, and relationality operate across human-animal boundaries while attending to race, gender, sexuality, and nation.

Weaver's publications demonstrate sustained engagement with how marginalized identities and beings navigate systems of power. His work spans transgender studies, animal studies, feminist theory, and affect theory, with particular attention to how these fields intersect in unexpected ways. His research often centers on human-nonhuman relationships, particularly with dogs, to explore broader questions of justice, kinship, and resistance across multiple axes of difference.

As an educator, Weaver teaches courses including Introduction to Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS 105), Transgender Studies (GWSS 335), Disability Justice and Gender (GWSS 375), and Interspecies Intersections (GWSS 300), among others, demonstrating his commitment to interdisciplinary pedagogy that connects gender studies with animal studies, disability studies, and environmental justice.
