Haoming Liu

Haoming Liu is a Professor of Chinese and Japanese at Vassar College since 2003, affiliated with the Asian Studies Program. His academic journey includes degrees from Peking University (B.L. 1985), Indiana University (M.A. Comparative Literature 1990s), and Yale University (Ph.D. Comparative Literature 2001). He has held teaching positions at Wellesley College, Wesleyan University, and Bard College, alongside visiting roles at Nanjing University (China) and the University of Trier (Germany).

His research focuses on comparative literature and translation studies, with expertise in Classical Chinese and Western poetry, literary theory, and German Idealism. Notable works include translations of Pindar, Horace, Hölderlin, and Rilke, alongside monographs on textual criticism and Ezra Pound. Liu’s translations emphasize fidelity to source texts while exploring cross-cultural resonance.

Recent projects include a 2024 book on Sicilian archaeology and poetry, and an upcoming Hölderlin odes translation. His work bridges East-West literary traditions, often addressing themes of exile, linguistic adaptation, and classical heritage. Liu has presented globally at institutions like Tübingen University and Peking University, and received grants from the German DFG (2021).
