Hans Piena

Prof. Dr. Hans Piena serves as Endowed Professor in the Department of Art and Culture, History, and Antiquity within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research centers on multidisciplinary analysis of historical objects, reconstructing their evolving meanings over time, and applying historical knowledge for sustainable futures while documenting underrepresented groups including homeless individuals, day laborers, elderly, and sex workers.

His expertise spans Historical Archaeology, Material Culture Studies, and Cultural Heritage preservation, with specialized focus on Dendrochronology, Microfossil Analysis, and sustainable applications of historical techniques. He employs advanced methods including phytolith studies, fungal spore analysis, and radiocarbon dating to examine wooden artifacts and their cultural contexts.

Recent publications demonstrate consistent emphasis on scientific analysis of historical wooden objects, utilizing microfossil biogeography and multidisciplinary dating approaches to determine provenance. His work bridges archaeological science with cultural interpretation, particularly evident in studies of Rijksmuseum collections, historicizing furniture, and Thüringen chip wood boxes.

Prof. Piena actively contributes as Conservator at the Netherlands Open Air Museum, Board Member of Stichting Paard & Karos, Spokesperson for the TEFAF Vetting Committee (Western Furniture up to 1600), and Advisor to the Mondriaan Fund on movable heritage. He teaches "The History of Collecting & Exhibiting (1500-present)", emphasizing the transient nature of human perspectives in objects' long lifespans.
