The Royal Academy of Music, University of LondonAbout
Hannah Roberts is the Jacqueline Du Pré Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Cello at the Royal Northern College of Music. An internationally acclaimed cellist, she has performed as soloist with major orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, and BBC Concert Orchestra.
Educated at the Yehudi Menuhin School under William Pleeth and later with Ralph Kirshbaum at the Royal Northern College of Music, Roberts won major competitions including the Pierre Fournier Award and Jacqueline Du Pré Memorial Award early in her career.
Her pedagogical approach emphasizes technical freedom, creative practice methods, and developing individual artistic voices. She founded an international cello course now in its eighteenth year and conducts masterclasses worldwide. Roberts maintains an active performance career while mentoring prominent young cellists who hold principal positions in major orchestras and pursue solo careers.
As principal cellist of Manchester Camerata, she combines performance with educational outreach. Her teaching philosophy focuses on cultivating 'generous musicianship' through technical mastery, creative exploration, and emotional communication.
