Guy Ballard

Guy Ballard is an Associate Professor in Ecosystem Management at the School of Environmental and Rural Science, University of New England. He specializes in wildlife ecology, focusing on practical outcomes from science-based management programs, particularly involving invasive species such as dingoes, foxes, feral cats, and spotted-tailed quolls. His research spans diverse ecosystems, including rugged escarpments, coastal, desert, and sub-alpine regions of eastern NSW.

His primary research areas include invasive species ecology, predator ecology, wildlife management, and conservation. He has supervised Honours, Masters, and PhD students, including recipients of the University Medal and Chancellor’s Medal.

The PEST research group employs advanced methodologies like GPS-telemetry, accelerometry, audio monitoring, and camera trapping to study species at ecologically meaningful scales. This applied research directly informs improved management strategies for both invasive and native wildlife.

Professional affiliations include chairing the National Spotted-Tailed Quoll Recovery Team and participation in the Resilient Landscapes NESP Hub Executive Committee, National Feral Cat Taskforce, and Northern Tablelands LLS Regional Pest Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Australasian Wildlife Management Society, Ecological Society of Australia, Australian Mammal Society, and Royal Zoological Society of NSW.
