Gregory Mentzas

Gregory Mentzas is a Professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (SCE) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), serving as Director of the Department of Electrical Industrial Devices and Decision Systems and founder/head of the Research Unit for Information Systems Management (IMU) at the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS). His career spans over 35 years with continuous academic leadership and research innovation.

He earned a Diploma in Engineering (1984) and Ph.D. in Operations Research and Information Systems (1988), both from NTUA.

Professor Mentzas pioneers AI-enabled decision support systems, focusing on augmenting human intelligence through data-driven approaches. His work spans Management Information Systems, Data Analytics, and Knowledge Management, with current projects targeting prescriptive analytics for Industry 4.0 digital assistants, human-in-the-loop reinforcement learning, and big data applications in personalized health and sustainable mobility.

His accolades include:

• Top 2% global ranking among highly cited scientists (PLOS Biology 2021)

He has supervised over 100 diploma theses and 30 PhD students (21 completed, 9 in progress), while securing more than 60 research grants totaling 18+ million euros from the European Commission and national bodies since 1997.

The Information Management Unit (IMU) he established drives innovation in knowledge-driven organizations, contributing to 60+ R&D projects and spawning three technology spin-off companies through its work on semantic web systems and decision analytics.
