Graham Finlayson is a Professor of Computing Science at the University of East Anglia (UEA), leading the Vision Group within the School of Computing Sciences. He is a member of the Colour and Imaging Lab, renowned for pioneering research in color science and imaging. Finlayson holds a unique distinction as the youngest professorial appointment in UEA's history, awarded at age 30 in 1999. His academic journey includes a BSc from the University of Strathclyde, followed by MSc and PhD degrees from Simon Fraser University, where he received the prestigious 'Dean’s Medal' for his doctoral work.
Finlayson's research spans computer science, engineering, and psychophysics, with a focus on color imaging, computational geometry, and embedded systems. His work has resulted in over 200 conference papers, 50+ journal articles, and 25+ patents, many integrated into commercial products like photo software, ASICs, and camera systems. Notable collaborations include partnerships with Apple, Sony, and Unilever.
Recognition includes the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2002), Royal Society-Wolfson Merit Award (2008), and Royal Photographic Society’s Davies Medal (2009). He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, Society for Imaging Science and Technology, and the Institute of Engineering Technology. His achievements also extend to entrepreneurship: founding Imsense Ltd, a spin-out company sold to a major industry player in 2010, marking UEA’s first venture capital-backed exit.
Recent research focuses on spectral reconstruction, underwater imaging enhancement, and computational color constancy. Key projects include collaborations with Cefas on remote sensing applications and EPSRC initiatives in agricultural robotics.
