About
Giuseppe Piro is a Full Professor in Telecommunications at the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy) and co-responsible of the Experimental Laboratory of Integrated Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks and Services (iTNT-NS) under the PNRR PE14 RESTART Partnership. He earned his first- and second-level degrees (both cum laude) in Telecommunications Engineering (2006 and 2008, respectively) and a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering (2012) from Politecnico di Bari.
His research spans mobile communication systems, integrated terrestrial/non-terrestrial networks, physical and network layer security, intent-based networking, Internet of Things (IoT), Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Information-Centric Networking (ICN), nano-scale communications, and network simulation tools. His work includes foundational contributions to 5G and 6G standards, notably as Principal Investigator for the PRIN project INSPIRE and Local Investigator for PNRR-funded initiatives like ISP5G+ Innovative Security Paradigms.
His publications focus on wireless communication, network security, and IoT, with a strong emphasis on practical implementations (e.g., emulation testbeds, UAV-mounted metasurfaces, vehicular federated learning). He has received multiple Best Paper awards, including recognitions at IEEE ISCC (2024), IEEE SDS (2019), IEEE WD'12 (2012), and IEEE Standards Education e-Magazine (2014).
He founded open-source network simulation tools like 5G-air-simulator, LTE-Sim, and NANO-SIM, and serves as Associate Editor for journals such as Internet Technology Letter, Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing, and Sensors. His collaborations span EU H2020 projects (FANTASTIC-5G, symbIoTe) and Italian national initiatives (PNRR, MIUR PON, MISE projects).
