About
Giuseppe Intini is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and an Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology/Oncology) at the Medical School. He is affiliated with the Hillman Cancer Center, the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the University of Siena School of Dental Medicine as a Visiting Professor.
- Education: DDS (University of L'Aquila, Italy, 1995), MS in Oral Sciences (University at Buffalo, 2000), PhD in Oral Biology/Tissue Engineering (University at Buffalo, 2007)
Dr. Intini’s research focuses on skeletal stem/progenitor cells, their role in bone regeneration, and their dysfunction in aging and diseases like osteosarcoma. He investigates molecular mechanisms controlling stem cell “stemness,” tissue repair, and interactions with their microenvironment, including inflammation and aging hallmarks such as genomic instability and mitochondrial dysfunction.
His work bridges clinical periodontics and translational science, with funding from NIH, CASIS/NASA, and foundations like Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma. Recent studies highlight the impact of microgravity on bone homeostasis and therapeutic strategies for osteoporosis.
- Scientific Awards: NIH/NIDCR Pathway to Independence Award, Distinguished Junior Faculty Award (Harvard), American Academy of Periodontology Teaching and Mentorship Award, Eleanor and Miles Shore Scholars in Medicine Award (Harvard), and others.
Dr. Intini has supervised 18 trainees and co-directs the Pittsburgh Center for Interdisciplinary Bone and Mineral Research. His lab explores stem cell niches, tumor microenvironment interactions, and novel regenerative therapies via single-cell RNA sequencing and niche rejuvenation strategies.
