Giedrius Subačius is a Professor and Endowed Chair in Lithuanian Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago's Department of Polish, Russian, and Lithuanian Studies. His research focuses on the sociolinguistic history of Lithuanian, historical orthographic systems, and the development of European standard languages. He holds multiple advanced degrees including a PhD and Habilitation from Vilnius University.
Research interests span Lithuanian language evolution, orthographic reforms, and historical sociolinguistics, with particular emphasis on 19th century textual analysis. Publications demonstrate consistent focus on manuscript analysis and orthographic systems in historical Lithuanian texts. Current projects include editing the scholarly journal Archivum Lithuanicum and researching the history of European standard languages.
