Gian S. Pagnucci

Gian S. Pagnucci serves as Professor of English and Chair of the Department of Language, Literature, and Writing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania within the College of Arts, Humanities, Media, and Public Affairs. With 15 years of departmental leadership experience, he has established himself as a prominent figure in academic administration and has presented extensively at the Academic Chairpersons Conference, including invited plenary sessions for new chairs.

Dr. Pagnucci earned his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, English Education from the University of Wisconsin in 1995, following his BA in English and Journalism from the same institution in 1989. His professional background includes five years as a technical writer, which informs his scholarly work in composition and technology.

His research spans Comics Studies with particular expertise in superhero literature, where he has developed significant scholarship on characters like Captain America, Daredevil, and Moon Knight. His narrative inquiry work explores storytelling as both a research methodology and pedagogical tool, while his composition theory research bridges technical writing and digital literacy. He has maintained a lifelong interest in comic books since childhood, which has evolved into rigorous academic scholarship.

Dr. Pagnucci's recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward increasingly detailed character analyses within superhero comics, particularly focusing on Daredevil's supporting cast. His work connects comic book narratives to broader educational and cultural contexts, examining how superhero stories reflect and shape American values.

As an educator, he teaches ENGL 222: Technical Writing, ENGL 808: Technology and Literacy, ENGL 830: Composition Theory, and ENGL 846: Advanced Seminar in Literacy. He is particularly known for English 481: The Literature of Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Superheroes, which reflects his specialized expertise.

Dr. Pagnucci hosts Superhero Smash, a radio show featuring superhero music and comic book lore from multiple universes, with Season III scheduled for Summer 2025. He is currently co-editing a special issue of Humanities journal titled The Power of Superhero Literature: Applying the Lessons of Superheroes to Real Life with Dr. Sandy Eckard, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to advancing scholarship in this field.
