Dr. Geza Benke is a Senior Lecturer in Planetary Health at Monash University with extensive experience in occupational and environmental epidemiology. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology from Monash University, following a Master of Applied Science in Environmental Engineering and a BSc in Physics from the University of Melbourne.
His research focuses on occupational/environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment methodologies, and respiratory/cancer epidemiology. Key projects include the Healthwise study, INTEROCC study, and leadership of the Australian Mesothelioma Registry. He has led 23 research projects, including WHO systematic reviews on radiofrequency field exposures and cognitive impairment.
Research highlights include studies on occupational asthma incidence, radiofrequency exposure effects, and genetic susceptibility to glioma. His work addresses environmental carcinogens, dust exposures, and long-term health impacts of occupational hazards. Dr. Benke has published over 187 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
He has received awards such as the Denis Robertson Poster Prize (2014) and Kammer Merit in Authorship Award (2014). His advisory roles include President of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (2008). Current work explores the exposome-wide associations with COPD and integrates big data in public health analysis.
Key collaborations span international studies like the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) and the multi-national MOBI-Kids initiative. His research bridges occupational hygiene with planetary health, emphasizing real-world exposure assessment and policy translation.
