Gerhard Rogler, MD, PhD, is a leading academic in translational medicine, currently serving as Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Full Professor at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. His career spans over two decades, including roles as Novartis Professor (2007–2014) and Vice Medical Director at the University of Regensburg (2005–2007).
- Education: MD (1992, summa cum laude), PhD in Philosophy (1996, magna cum laude).
Research focus: Molecular mechanisms of genetic and environmental risk factors in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with emphasis on pH receptors (TDAG-8, GPR-4, OGR-1), protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPN2/22), and intestinal microbiota as therapeutic targets. Collaborations with ETH Zurich led to the start-up PHARMABIOME.
Scientific leadership includes directing the Swiss IBD cohort study (funded by SNSF, 250+ publications) and developing an in vivo model for intestinal fibrosis. He also explores fibrosis, tumor development, and fistulas in IBD patients.
