Gerhard Rogler is Professor and Director of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University Hospital Zurich, University of Zurich, Switzerland, a position held since 2017. He concurrently serves as Center Director of the Obesity Center Zurich and maintains active clinical and research leadership.
His academic foundation includes:
- MD (summa cum laude, 1992) from University of Ulm
- PhD in Philosophy (magna cum laude, 1996)
- Habilitation in Experimental Internal Medicine and Internal Medicine (1999) at University of Regensburg
Rogler's research focuses on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), specifically molecular mechanisms of genetic risk factors (pH receptors TDAG-8/GPR-4/OGR-1 and protein tyrosine phosphatases PTPN2/PTPN22) and intestinal microbiota-based therapies. His work established PTPN22 as an inflammasome regulator and developed an in vivo intestinal fibrosis model. He co-founded PHARMABIOME with ETH Zurich and leads the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded IBD Cohort Study (250+ publications) investigating environmental factors and translational mechanisms.
