About
Professor Gerhard Leubner serves as Chair of Plant Biochemistry and Head of the Seed Science and Technology Group at Royal Holloway University of London's Department of Biological Sciences within the School of Life Sciences and the Environment. With over 25 years of research experience, he leads an internationally recognized team conducting interdisciplinary seed research that bridges molecular mechanisms with practical applications for food security and sustainability. His work has established important discoveries in crop and weed seed germination, dormancy, and quality using integrative approaches.
Leubner's research focuses on understanding the mechanistic basis underlying seed dormancy, longevity, and germination to improve seed quality and seedling performance of agricultural crops. His team combines population-based threshold modeling, biomechanics, advanced imaging methods, tissue-specific hormone analysis, transcriptomics, and reverse-genetics to enhance understanding of seed tissue interactions. Key research areas include endosperm weakening mechanisms, hormonal regulation of seed germination, seed evolution across phylogenetic clades, and developing sustainable seed technologies including gas plasma treatments. His work addresses critical challenges in climate-resilient food supply chains through innovative seed enhancement technologies.
- Alfred Mayer Plenary Lecture (2021)
- Elected Trustee, ISSS Executive Committee (since 2011)
- Numerous student awards including 'Preis für die beste Staatsexamensarbeit'
- Editorial roles for Seed Science Research, AoB Plants, and Journal of Experimental Botany
Professor Leubner has supervised over 30 PhD and MSc students while maintaining extensive collaborations with industry partners including KWS Seed SE, Syngenta, and Tozer Seeds, as well as research organizations like Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Royal Horticultural Society. His research has contributed to significant projects including the Rocket Science Project with the UK Space Agency. The Seed Science and Technology Group operates multiple research streams including seed molecular ecophysiology and biomechanics, weed seed molecular ecophysiology, and crop seed technology with gas plasma applications.
