Dr. Gerd Becker is a visiting professor at the Center for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. A leading figure in visual anthropology, he has been a freelance journalist and filmmaker since 1982, with prior work at North German Broadcasting (NDR) from 1983-1988. He has taught at universities including Hamburg, Bremen, Mainz, and Al Akhawayn University in Morocco. At ZIS, he developed visual anthropology and organized academic events such as the 2006/2007 winter semester series:
- Lecture and Film Series: 'Parallel Cinematic Worlds' explored Maghreb feature films as tools for understanding northwestern Africa.
- Public Discussion Series: 'Worldviews – Image Worlds' showcased young researchers' use of audiovisual media in academic work.
His interdisciplinary approach bridges film, anthropology, and geography, emphasizing how fictional narratives shape cultural understanding.
