Geraldo L. Cadava

Geraldo L. Cadava is a Professor of History at Northwestern University and holds the Wender-Lewis Teaching and Research Professorship. A scholar of U.S. history with a focus on Latino communities, borderlands, and migration, he earned his Ph.D. at Yale University (2008) and B.A. at Dartmouth College (2000). He serves as Director of the American Studies Program and is affiliated with the Latina and Latino Studies Program, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research.

Cadava's research explores the intersections of Latino political identity, U.S.-Mexico borderlands history, and transnational migration. His publications include two books and numerous articles analyzing the economic, cultural, and political dimensions of these topics. He teaches courses on Latino History, the American West, borderlands studies, and contemporary U.S. history, including Watergate and the 2016/2020 elections.

His scholarly work has been recognized with prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Frederick Jackson Turner Award (2014) and fellowships at Stanford and Harvard. Cadava is also a public intellectual, contributing to The New Yorker, The New York Times, and co-editing Public Books, while authoring the Substack newsletter Latinos in Depth.
