Georges Tamer is Professor of Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, where he has held a chair since 2012. He serves as founding director of the Bavarian Research Center for Interreligious Discourses (BaFID). Previously, he occupied the Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies at Ohio State University (2007-2012), a Chair of Arabic Studies at the Free University Berlin (2006-2007), and lectured at Erlangen-Nürnberg (2001-2006).
His research focuses on:
- Hermeneutics of the Qur’ān
- Islamic philosophy and theology
- Jewish-Christian-Islamic discourses
- Medieval Arabic literature
- Christian-Arabic thought
- Interreligious dialogue in pre-modern contexts
He has received prestigious awards including a Gerda Henkel Foundation Marie Curie Fellowship and research fellowships at Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Study and Erlangen-Nürnberg's International Consortium for Research in the Humanities.
Prof. Tamer is chief editor of the journal Erlanger Jahrbuch für Interreligiöse Diskurse and has authored/edited notable works such as Islamische Philosophie und die Krise der Moderne and the Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses book series with Walter de Gruyter.
