About
Dr. Gene Brody is a Regents’ Professor and Director Emeritus of the Center for Family Research at the University of Georgia’s College of Family and Consumer Sciences. His academic journey includes roles such as Assistant Professor (1976–1980), Associate Professor (1980–1984), and Distinguished Research Professor (1991–2004). He has been pivotal in developing family-centered prevention programs (SAAF, SAAF-T, and AIM) addressing drug use and health disparities among African American youth in rural communities. His work bridges developmental psychology, public health, and neurobiology, focusing on how supportive parenting mitigates risks from poverty and discrimination.
Education: PhD in Developmental Psychology (University of Arizona, 1976), MA (1973), and BA (UC Santa Barbara, 1972) in Psychology.
Research Interests: Family-centered interventions, health disparities, neurodevelopmental impacts of adversity, and resilience mechanisms. His studies highlight protective effects of parenting on biomarkers like inflammation and epigenetic aging, while also revealing 'skin-deep resilience'—where psychosocial success coexists with hidden health risks in low-SES populations.
Awards: Over 30 years, he has received honors including the Reuben Hill Award (2005, 2007), James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award (2023), and induction into the Honor Hall of Recognition (2014). His work has been embedded in national prevention programs and policy initiatives, such as the White House Conference on Helping America’s Youth (2005).
Labs/Teams: Directs the Center for Family Research, collaborating with experts in neuroscience, epidemiology, and clinical psychology. His team’s longitudinal studies have followed cohorts for decades, linking childhood interventions to adult health outcomes.
