Gary Matthewman

Gary Matthewman is a Vocal Repertoire Coach in the Vocal Studies department at the Royal College of Music, part of the institution's Vocal & Opera school. He is recognized as one of the UK's leading song pianists with an international performance career.

Matthewman's research and performance interests center on collaborative piano and art song repertoire, with particular expertise in German Lieder, French mélodie, and English song traditions. His work emphasizes the equal partnership between singer and pianist in recital performance.

As a performer, Matthewman has appeared worldwide with distinguished artists including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Thomas Allen, Sumi Jo, and Mark Padmore, performing at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, and Wigmore Hall in London.

His notable recording of Schubert's Winterreise with Matthew Rose received critical acclaim, demonstrating his mastery of the Lieder tradition. Matthewman also serves as a song coach for the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Matthewman contributes significantly to vocal training at the RCM through specialized coaching in repertoire, language diction, and collaborative techniques, preparing students for professional careers in both opera and concert performance.
