Gaetano Scamarcio

Gaetano Scamarcio serves as Director of the Institute of Nanoscience (Cnr Nano) and holds the position of Full Professor of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Bari (currently on leave). His career includes full-time research appointments at Bell Laboratories (USA) and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Physics (Germany), with additional visiting roles at the Walter Schottky Institute (Munich), Bell Labs, and Université Paris Diderot.

His research spans quantum optoelectronics, terahertz photonics, and organic bioelectronics, focusing on emergent collective phenomena in both inorganic and organic systems. Key contributions include inventing the superlattice quantum cascade laser, pioneering detectorless THz nanoscopy, and demonstrating single-molecule sensitivity in millimetre-scale transistor and graphene-based sensors. Current work investigates mesoscale cooperative effects for ultra-sensitive detection and unconventional signal processing in organic electronic platforms.

With over 300 publications in leading journals including Science, Advanced Materials, and Nature Communications, his research demonstrates consistent interdisciplinary innovation at the physics-materials-biology interface. Publication trends reveal progressive expansion from quantum cascade laser physics to bioelectronic applications and nanoscale sensing phenomena.

Scamarcio has coordinated large-scale national and European research consortia, securing substantial funding for interdisciplinary projects spanning quantum optoelectronics and bioelectronics. As Director of the Institute of Nanoscience, he leads a multidisciplinary team operating state-of-the-art nanofabrication and characterization facilities.
