London South Bank UniversityAbout
Dr Freya Bayne is a Research Fellow in the Sport and Exercise Science Department within the School of Applied Sciences at London South Bank University (LSBU). She is actively engaged in research on environmental psychophysiology, with a focus on heat alleviation and recovery strategies in athletic performance. She also serves as a Performance Consultant at the Human Performance Centre at LSBU and teaches Environmental Exercise Physiology at Level 6.
- PhD (2018–2023)
Her research interests center on environmental factors affecting human performance, particularly heat stress and recovery. She investigates how heat alleviation strategies can minimize performance impairments and heat-related illnesses, and more recently, how heat therapy (e.g., hot water immersion) accelerates recovery from muscle injuries. Her work also extends to respiratory responses in asthmatic youth during exercise-induced bronchospasm.
The recent articles show a consistent focus on thermal physiology and athletic performance, particularly in cycling and triathlon contexts. Themes include heat acclimation, cooling strategies, feedback systems in endurance performance, and muscle recovery using thermal interventions. Her research integrates physiological monitoring with practical applications in sports.
Dr Bayne has contributed to research that aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health and well-being through sports science. She has supervised at least one research project, indicating her role in mentoring. While no specific grants are mentioned, her applied work at the Human Performance Centre suggests industry or performance-sector engagement.
She is involved with the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre (SESRC) and contributes to both academic and practical domains of human performance. Her dual role as a researcher and performance consultant highlights the translational nature of her work.
