About
Dr Doug Thake is an Associate Professor at Coventry University's Centre for Physical Activity, Sport and Exercise Sciences. His research focuses on applied human physiology, particularly acute and chronic responses to environmental stressors like altitude and heat, with applications in occupational safety, military deployment, and athletic performance. He has conducted field expeditions in the Nepal Himalaya and collaborates with industries such as Jaguar Land Rover to develop solutions for thermal comfort and human tolerance.
Research Interests: Applied Human Physiology; Altitude Physiology; Heat Stress; Cross Acclimation; Occupational Physiology; Environmental Physiology.
His work bridges experimental physiology and real-world applications, addressing human physiological responses in extreme conditions. Recent studies explore cross-tolerance mechanisms between stressors and thermal comfort systems in vehicular environments.
Advising and Grants: Supervised 14 MScR and 4 PhD students, currently mentoring 5 PhD candidates. Lead researcher on the STRIVE project with Jaguar Land Rover (2013–2014), focusing on thermal comfort via machine learning.
Labs/Teams: Active within the Centre for Physical Activity, Sport and Exercise Sciences at Coventry University.
