Fred Chen

Dr. Fred Chen is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Medical School and the Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science, affiliated with the Lions Eye Institute. He holds roles as Director of Clinical Research at the Lions Eye Institute and Director of the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia. His expertise spans clinical practice and research in retinal diseases, surgical retina, and translational research.

Education: Medical degree with Honours (1999), PhD in retinal pigment epithelium transplantation (2011, University College London). Completed fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and established a retinal dystrophy clinic in Perth.

Research focuses on retinal dystrophies, retinal imaging, stem cell-based disease modeling, and clinical trials for gene therapies.
