Frank R. Safford (1935–2022) was a distinguished historian and full professor at Northwestern University’s Department of History within the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. He taught at Dartmouth College (1962–1966) before joining Northwestern, where he earned tenure in 1972 and became full professor in 1976. His academic leadership included serving as History Department Chair (1986–1989, 1992–1994), associate dean for Social Sciences (1994–1998, 2000–2001), and director of the International Studies undergraduate program (2002–2006).
His research focused on 19th-century Colombian and Latin American history, emphasizing economic transitions, political ideologies, and regional dynamics. Key works include Colombia: Fragmented Land, Divided Society (2001) and The Ideal of the Practical (1976). He was honored with Colombia’s Order of San Carlos (1995) and an honorary engineering doctorate (2011).
A dedicated educator and mentor, Safford championed collaborative programs like Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Colleagues praised his fairness, humor, and support for junior faculty.
