About
Francesco Piazza is a Professor of Theoretical Physics III at the University of Augsburg's Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Materials Engineering. He leads a research group focused on non-equilibrium quantum field theory, merging quantum-optics and condensed-matter methods to study collective phenomena and many-body phases with applications in quantum materials and nonlinear optics.
- Education: Ph.D. in Physics (2007-2011, University of Trento), Degree in Physics (2002-2007, University of Bologna).
Research Interests center on strong-coupling QED in materials, quantum engineering of light-matter interactions, and theoretical modeling of exotic quantum phases. His work bridges quantum optics with condensed matter to explore superconductivity, superradiance, and quantum criticality.
Selected Publications highlight advancements in cavity QED with quantum gases, photon-mediated superconductivity, and control of many-body dynamics via quantum states of light. These span disciplines like quantum materials, quantum nonlinear optics, and many-body physics.
Scientific Awards include:
- Max-Planck Research Group Leader
- APART Research Fellowship
- Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship
Teaching includes courses on field theory of classical and quantum collective dynamics and seminars on many-body quantum theory. He advises Ph.D. students Arkadeep Mitra and Nicolas Schmölz.
Research Team includes postdocs Dr. Md Mursalin Islam, Dr. Michele Pini, and Dr. Vadim Plastovets. His professorship is funded by Bavaria's Hightech Agenda Bayern Plus and integrated into the Munich Quantum Valley.
