About
Frances S. Hasso is Professor in Duke University's Program in Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies with secondary appointments in Sociology and History. Her scholarship examines gender, sexuality, and power dynamics across the Arab world.
Research explores feminist theory, colonial legacies, social movements, and family politics. Major publications analyze revolutionary transformations, biopolitics in Palestine, queer strategies in Beirut, and post-revolution masculinities in Egyptian cinema.
Publications reveal consistent focus on political contestation through bodily and spatial practices. Recent work examines war-time family transformations, midwifery politics, and torture rehabilitation clinics. Methodological approaches combine archival research with ethnography to challenge Western epistemological frameworks.
Editorial leadership includes past service for Journal of Middle East Women's Studies. Research dissemination includes Arabic translations and engagement with transnational feminist networks. Current projects continue examining care politics under political violence.
