About
Floris Rutjes is a Full Professor and Chair of Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Radboud University's Faculty of Science in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He has held this position since 1999 and previously served as Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam (1995-1999). Currently, he also serves as President of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) since 2021 and directs the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) at Radboud University.
Professor Rutjes specializes in the synthesis of organic small molecules with research spanning four major areas: (i) New Synthetic Methods involving chemo-enzymatic and transition metal-catalyzed reactions to produce enantiopure heterocyclic building blocks; (ii) Medicinal Chemistry focusing on biologically active small molecules; (iii) Molecular Bioconjugation developing 'click' probes like BCN and DIBAC/DBCO that are now used in clinical trials for antibody-drug conjugates; and (iv) Flow Chemistry where he pioneered the use of continuous flow microreactors in organic synthesis. His work uniquely bridges fundamental academic research with industrial applications.
His publication record shows consistent contributions to organic chemistry, with recent work (2021-2017) emphasizing advanced spectroscopic techniques, hyperpolarization methods for NMR detection, novel catalytic systems, and applications in medicinal chemistry. The research demonstrates a strong trajectory from fundamental chemical methodologies toward biomedical applications, particularly in drug development and diagnostic techniques.
Among his notable honors:
- Chemistry Europe Fellow (2022)
- Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion (2020)
- Most Entrepreneurial Scientist of the Netherlands Award (2008)
- International AstraZeneca Award for Research in Organic Chemistry (2003)
- Gold Medal of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (2002)
Professor Rutjes has successfully secured significant research funding, including a €1.5M grant from the Top-sector Health-Holland program to develop antiviral compounds against COVID-19, and leads multiple international consortia including an EU-Eurostar project for PTSD treatments and the COILED project for immunity research. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident through spin-off companies like Chiralix (2002) and FutureChemistry (2008), with several other companies including Synaffix and COILED Therapeutics founded based on research conducted under his guidance.
As Director of the Institute for Molecules and Materials, he oversees a multidisciplinary research environment spanning organic chemistry, solid-state NMR, microfluidics, and MRI imaging. His collaborations extend to the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, Eindhoven University of Technology, and multiple pharmaceutical companies, creating a robust ecosystem for translating chemical innovations into practical applications.
