Flint Angeroth Franks

Flint Angeroth Franks is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Ensembles/Trumpet at Simpson College, Department of Music. He conducts the Simpson College Jazz Ensemble, teaches undergraduate trumpet lessons, and instructs various music courses. He also organizes the annual Simpson College Jazz Festival and Jazz Combo Camp.

Flint's research and performance interests center on trumpet performance, jazz studies, brass pedagogy, and Serbian classical trumpet traditions. His work bridges performance practice with cultural and historical studies, particularly through his doctoral research conducted in Serbia. He is actively involved in both orchestral and chamber music performance, including collaborations with the SAU Faculty Brass Quintet, Agogé Brass Quintet, Hot Horns, and various pit orchestras.

As a performer, Flint has toured internationally in Brazil, China, Austria, and Serbia, and has performed at notable venues and conferences including the University of Novi Sad, Purdue University Fort Wayne, and the CBDNA National Conference. He has also participated in the National Trumpet Competition and contributed to the International Trumpet Guild Journal.

Flint has extensive experience as a clinician, adjudicator, and instructor, having served as Band Director in Iowa, assistant brass caption head for the Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps (2018), and visual caption head for River City Rhythm (2021).

His educational background includes:

• Doctor of Music in Brass Performance, Florida State University, 2023

His doctoral treatise, "The Serbian Trumpet Tradition: The History, Repertoire, and Pedagogy of Classical Trumpet in Serbia", was based on a two-month research project in Serbia in 2022. He has studied under Dr. Richard Tirk, Dr. Brett Dodson, Dr. John T. Cord, Mr. Mark Clodfelter, and Dr. Christopher Moore.
