About
Clinical Professor Fiona Lecky holds dual appointments at the University of Sheffield's School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) as Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at CURE (Centre for Urgent and Emergency Care Research), and as Honorary Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Salford Royal Hospital. She maintains additional affiliations as Research Director of the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) at the University of Manchester and Research Professor at the Humanitarian Conflict Response Institute (HCRI). With a 60/40 split between academic and clinical commitments, Professor Lecky leads international trauma research initiatives while maintaining active clinical practice.
Her research program spans traumatic brain injury epidemiology, major trauma systems optimization, and biomarker development in emergency care. Current investigations include the Global Emergency Care Research Network (GEMCARN), Major Trauma Triage tool Study (MATTS), and REBOA (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta) trials. Her work has driven national guideline development, notably chairing the 2014 NICE Head Injury Guideline update and establishing PhD studentships for Emergency Medicine trainees through the College of Emergency Medicine Research Committee.
Professor Lecky's publication record demonstrates consistent leadership in trauma systems research, with recent work examining weekend effects in trauma care, pediatric injury outcomes, and international comparisons of trauma network effectiveness. Her research portfolio includes major grants from NIHR HTA, GCRF-QR, EU FP7, and Australian NHMRC totaling over £2.5 million in active funding. As Principal Investigator for TARN since 2002, she has overseen the evolution of this national trauma registry into a critical quality improvement tool for the NHS.
Her leadership extends to international collaborations through the International Federation for Emergency Medicine Research Committee (since 2010) and the CENTER-TBI consortium. Current projects focus on low-value care reduction in trauma systems, prehospital TBI triage optimization, and global emergency care capacity building. Professor Lecky actively supervises PhD candidates and medical students, with particular emphasis on translating research findings into clinical practice improvements across the trauma care continuum.
