About
Dr. Filip Moons is an Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education at the Freudenthal Institute, which is part of the Faculty of Science at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His work focuses on the intersection of mathematics education, assessment methodologies, and digital technologies. Before joining Utrecht University in 2023, he worked at the University of Antwerp where he served as a teacher trainer in Mathematics & Computer Science and completed his PhD research as an FWO-fellow.
Dr. Moons has an extensive educational background in both mathematics and computer science. He earned his PhD in Educational Sciences from the University of Antwerp in 2023 with a dissertation titled "Semi-automated assessment of handwritten mathematics tasks." He also holds an MSc in Statistical Data Analysis from Ghent University (2023), an MSc in Applied Computer Science from the Free University of Brussels (2017), and both BSc and MSc degrees in Mathematics with a specialization in education from the Free University of Brussels (2015).
Dr. Moons' research primarily centers on assessment in mathematics education, with particular emphasis on developing and evaluating semi-automated assessment methods. His work explores how digital technologies can enhance the efficiency and reliability of grading while maintaining pedagogical value. He investigates the use of atomic, reusable feedback systems, checkbox grading methodologies, and the application of text mining techniques to analyze student responses. His research also addresses fundamental issues in mathematics education such as basic numeracy development and the integration of ICT in teaching practices.
Analysis of Dr. Moons' recent publications reveals a strong focus on innovative assessment techniques in mathematics education. His work consistently examines how technology can improve the reliability and efficiency of grading while maintaining educational value. A significant portion of his research investigates "atomic feedback" systems that provide specific, reusable comments on student work. He has conducted extensive research on inter-rater reliability in mathematics assessment and has explored how students respond to different feedback formats. His work bridges educational theory with practical classroom applications, particularly in the areas of algebraic thinking and mathematical literacy.
Dr. Moons has been actively involved in numerous professional activities that extend beyond his research and teaching. He serves as a member of the editorial board for Educational Studies in Mathematics, a leading peer-reviewed journal in the field. He has held leadership positions including President of the curriculum committee for mathematics in primary education in Flanders and editor & webmaster of Uitwiskeling, a Flemish magazine for mathematics teachers. His service also includes membership on the board of the Association of Flemish Mathematics Teachers (VVWL) and participation in curriculum development for secondary mathematics education in Flanders.
Dr. Moons has organized significant academic events including the FAME (Feedback & Assessment in Mathematics Education) conference and will serve as local organizer for the YESS Summer School 2026 in Utrecht. His work has practical applications in educational settings across multiple countries, as evidenced by his research on mathematics education during the pandemic in Flanders, Germany, and the Netherlands. He has also contributed to policy development through his involvement with the Flemish government's education committees.
