Fergus Green

Dr. Fergus Green is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy at University College London (UCL). He serves as the Sustainable Development Theme Lead for the UCL Policy Lab and holds memberships in the UCL Centre for Law and Environment and the UCL Institute for Law, Politics & Philosophy. His research bridges political theory, climate governance, and energy policy, with a focus on justice in low-carbon transitions.

Research Focus: Fergus investigates the intersection of climate change with politics, law, and justice. His work is organized around three themes: (1) Restricting fossil fuel production and use, (2) Designing just transitions for communities affected by decarbonization, and (3) Building equitable social contracts through climate policy. He employs interdisciplinary approaches drawing from political economy, ethics, and public policy.

Publication Trends: His recent articles (2020–2025) predominantly analyze climate governance frameworks, anti-fossil fuel norms, and socio-political barriers to decarbonization. Common themes include justice-centered policy design, political feasibility of energy transitions, and accountability mechanisms for fossil fuel industries. Methodologies span normative theory, comparative policy analysis, and empirical case studies.

Leadership & Grants:

• Co-leads UCL's Climate Politics research cluster and serves as Deputy Director for Impact & Engagement.
• Co-Investigator for 'AdJUST' (EU Energy Transition project, 2022–2026) and 'JUSTDECARB' (Decarbonization Toolkit, 2020–2024).
